To a typical Fuzz living in the Hollows, Smyts are at best a vague rumor. There are the preserved partial remains of a Smyt in a museum in one Hollow, but most Fuzzes have never been there to see it. The remains were found floating in the body of water called The Snapperchomp Sea, which Frizzlegarb describes as unsailable.
And there are no other sentient species besides Fuzzes and Bots openly roaming the Hollows.

This suggests to me that the Hollows are on an island. Smyts aren't extinct - they're just on the far side of the water. The dead one they found was a luckless sailor who tried to make it across, and failed. Bots can get to the island because they don't need to sail - they can just walk along the bottom, assuming their washers are watertight, and nothing can eat them.

Re: Hollow-Fuzzes and Symts (minor spoiler)
well, our particular bot popped up in the floor of one of the hollows, and since Fizzlegarb is appointed with introduction, I guess that happens rather regulary.
In general, our world is limited by our own thoughts and beliefs, so why should that be different in the hollows? And since Bots are talking (after beeing taught at least), they sure would not hesitate to tell the fuzzes if there were smythes somewhere reachable. Even 3375 told Fizzlegarb he had seen one of them...

But from what Rob says this isn't about *beliefs" - it's about lack of information. Smyts still exist, or have done recently enough to leave a non-fossilized corpse in the fairly recent past, yet there are none in the Hollows, unless they are in deep hiding. One was found in an impassable sea and it didn't get there from the Fuzzes' side, so it must have come from somewhere over the water (or possibly under it, from some subaquatic vessel or tunnel).
You're right, though, that if the bots that come to the Hollows cone from an area where there are Smyts you'd expect the Fuzzes to have found out more about them, and to know for sure that they live, and where they live.
