Stiflebloom (very minor spoilers) Empty Stiflebloom (very minor spoilers)

In answer to a fan question.. as I noted with the 2009 strip which I believe introduced the plant, when I created Stiflebloom, I was engaging in a bit of pro-birth-control wish-fulfillment. It wasn't until later that I learned that in Roman times, there may have actually been a plant called Silphium that was used as a method of birth-control and/or abortifacient. (The historical record is hazy, and the plant may now be extinct.)

So, no, when I came up with the look for Stiflebloom, I was not modelling it after Siphium's possible inspiration of the traditional heart symbol. I was looking for something distinctive and symbolically feminine, and while poking around on Google Images, I found what was described as a Celtic symbol of female power. I don't know how accurate this description actually is, but I liked it and so used a slightly simplified variation for stiflebloom. If it's actually something horribly offensive in real life, I of course apologize.

And with stiflebloom, a woman has to eat/chew on a couple of the actual blooms every month, not the plant's leaves, though those are eatable as well, if not particularly tasty. The booms have no effect on male reproductive systems. One thing which encouraged the spread of the "Mansionland" Temple system: missionary-Oracles brought the plant with them to areas that previously didn't know about it, and formally encouraged its use. I haven't actually decided if it works on all mammals, or just Humans.

It's called a triskelion, it's pre-Celtic, I've never heard of any feminine connotations although I suppose it might represent the threefold goddess or the Christian trinity, but normally it represents Sicily or the Isle of Man. As such it stands for the sea god/folk-hero Mannan Mac Lir, after whom the Isle of Man is named.

I would wager that Stifflebloom was likely bred by wizwitches. So their convenience would make sense.
