Panegate return trips

When Frederick and Myrrh went to Mechana via a panegate, how did they get back? Did they leave the panegate open? Do panegates stay open until whoever passed through them returns? If so, I suppose there must be an override or they just ignore trundlebugs. 
Can they be opened from the far side with the right device or magic? Enquiring minds want to know!

At this point, I'll just say that no, Myrrh, for all her talents, cannot open a closed panegate from the other side. In fact, currently, no one can. The Ettins might have been able to, but even for them, it was a rather experimental technology.
