Someone speculated that the Polarites may have caused the Crash with their vast underearth activities/magic use. No comment on whether or not that is true, but yes, among the Humans currently living in "Mansionland", they are high on the list of potential suspects. The fact that relations with them were often tense at best, and that they are almost all long dead makes blaming them even easier. Yes, Peter's late father suffered some blowback on that front right after the Crash happened, but as hinted in-strip, beyond a few jokes, Peter himself is mostly spared any of that due to be actually being born in Eetown.

And yes, Myrrh says in this strip that the Magic "goes away" and "comes back", but she is speaking more metaphorically and hopefully rather than from any position of authority; she has no more idea who or what caused the Crash than anyone else. (Well, she is probably able to dismiss some of the sillier theories, and thanks to YoungMyrrh's brief time-travel trip, she did get a month's warning from Frowgler that the Crash was coming. She took full advantage; Myrrh is never one to let the grass grow under her feet.)

Polarites and the Crash (minor SPOILERS) Empty Re: Polarites and the Crash (minor SPOILERS)

I doubt that the magic of the world is so fragile way up that someone poking around would have caused the Crash. For one, the Ettins used far superior technology even to the Polarites (if stuff in the Mansion is to go by) and did far more stuff with it yet they didn't die because they poked something too hard. They died in a war.

The problem with the Crash is that (at least so far) there seems to be no proper facts to make good guesses yet it was so incredibly awful that it cannot be left alone. There has to be an explanation, it can't be just a random thing that happened just because. Even people that were born after it probably get that feeling. That's in the nature of humans. So I guess they make theories that pushes the right emotional buttons in people, like that theory and thus consider it true.

To slightly contradict my own "no comment".. Yes, "The Polarites did it by poking something" is a popular human-on-the-street theory, along with the more generic "The Wizwitches did it by messing up the Natural Order". Actual experts who survived the Crash (and yes, there were some) generally point to the fact that the flow of magic was so massive along the leylines, that even the Polarites barely made a dent. They (the experts) tend to fall into two camps: that somebody, somewhere, somehow, deliberately triggered the Crash, or it was a natural phenomenon that occurs at widely spaced intervals.
